Chapter 18

David arrived at the Town Hall Insurance building at 8:20 Monday morning. He didn’t get much sleep the night before. One thing that kept him up was the fact that Cain was still walking the streets. He knew it was hard for the police to arrest Cain if they didn’t have any evidence against him or a motive for him committing the crimes.

Another thing that kept him up was the way his wife was acting towards him. When he returned home from the police station, she barely talked to him. He thought she was still mad with him about Saturday night. She wasn’t feeling good, so that could have been a factor as well.

He couldn’t worry about that now, because he was about to walk inside the insurance building to face his coworkers. He knew they thought that Tammy and he were intimately seeing each other. He was nervous, but he wanted to gauge what they were thinking after the report about Tammy’s murder.

He walked inside the building and immediately felt the stares of his coworkers.

“Good morning, David,” Pam the receptionist said. He couldn’t help but notice the accusing stare she was giving him.

“Good morning, Pam.” He walked past her and looked back at his manager Scott’s office. Scott was standing behind his glass office door with his hands on his hips and his eyes locked on David.

“Good morning, Connie,” he said as he walked by her desk.

“Morning,” she replied. He wanted to reply to her cold greeting but decided to ignore the obvious attitude she was giving him. She met David’s wife on numerous occasions at work events, and she highly disapproved of the flirting between Tammy and him.

When he finally got to his desk, he looked across the office space at his coworkers. He could see them cutting their eyes at him. Pat and another agent peeked at him as they spoke in whispered tones.

He decided to ignore them all. He took off his mask and turned on his computer. While he waited for it to boot up, he saw Harold walking through the door. He gave David a puzzled look before walking to his desk.

Once Harold sat down, David asked him, “Did you hear the news about Tammy?”

Harold looked around the room. “Yeah, I heard about it. It was all over the news. Do you know who did it?”

“I might have an idea, but I can’t prove it. I get the feeling some of the people in here think I did it.”

“Forget what they think,” Harold said in a loud whisper. “I’ve been working with you for years, and I know you wouldn’t do something like this. Besides, if you were a killer, I think you would have killed Scott first.”

“You’re right about that,” David said with a chuckle. When he looked back at his computer screen, he saw that he’d received an email from the mayor’s office. He clicked on it and read the message. It came from the mayor’s secretary and in the email she told him that the mayor would love to talk to him about the endorsement.
